Since October 2019, Michael Kogeler is General Manager for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Sub-Sahara Africa (SSA), a subregion of the AWS Emerging Markets (EEM) region. This SSA region is composed of 47 countries of which some are the fastest growing countries in Africa. In his role, Michael is a member of the EEM Senior Leadership Team, reporting directly to Tony Van Den Berge, Regional Director, AWS Emerging Markets.
Before joining AWS, Michael was responsible for the global operations of a 23bn dollar sports betting and lottery business at Intralot covering 53 countries. Earlier Michael worked for 15 years at Microsoft where he was COO and CMO for Microsoft in the Middle-East and Africa region (MEA responsible for executing Microsoft’s global strategies across the local MEA countries, ensuring a positive experience for customers, partners and Consumers. During his 15 years tenure at Microsoft, Michael held various senior leadership roles and drove the company’s strategy, marketing and operations, both internationally, and on a local and regional level. He also worked directly for the President of Microsoft International (MSI) as Senior Director Strategic Projects where he was responsible for driving the international Cloud Computing Strategy, defining the worldwide SMB go-to-market Cloud Strategies.
Prior to joining Microsoft, Michael spent more than 10 years in Management and IT consulting with global companies such as McKinsey & Company, KPMG Management Consulting, Lotus, IBM Consulting, and EDS Consulting.
A seasoned leader with 25+ years of experience in senior executive roles, Michael is described as passionate for technology and business, strongly results-oriented, a convinced team player who strives for continuous improvement and people excellence.
Michael is Dutch from origin, has a Belgian passport and lives in Dubai. In his free time he enjoys new technology, sports like kite-surfing, snowboarding, running and sailing, as well as discovering new cultures and places during his travels.
